Matias Hits the (Yoga) Mat

These are basic yoga stretching movements that I can do on the mat (on my stomach or back) without worrying too much about balance or the distraction of my active 1 year old. Sometimes he tries to copy the movements; otherwise he just wants to climb on top of dad.

3 rounds of (20-30 seconds holds each pose):

Child's pose (Balasana)

Thread the needle (Parsva balasana)

Cat-cow pose (Chakravakasana)

Happy baby pose (Ananda balasana)

Movement Tips

  • Place kiddo next to you and encourage him/her to imitate slow movements or hold poses.
  • Based on mobility, your child may crawl/walk around you or try to crawl on top of you as you hold the poses.
  • Slow, controlled breathing (5-6 seconds inhale through your nose, 5-6 seconds exhale through your mouth)

Dad Tips

  • Allow your kiddo to explore your yoga mat, or place another mat next to yours
  • Find activities that help you bond -- like taking a swim class or jumping into the bathtub with your kiddo.
